Mexico City Stadium, best known worldwide as Estadio Azteca, stands in Mexico City as one of football's most important arenas. Set at high altitude and surrounded by a passionate local football culture, the venue is famous for its vast bowl, intimidating sound, and history of defining World Cup moments. It is usually connected with Club America, Mexico national-team matches, major concerts, and national sporting events. For 2026, its role is even bigger because it stages the tournament's opening match, giving Mexico a symbolic first night in the largest World Cup ever. No other assigned venue carries the same historic weight: two previous World Cup finals, Maradona mythology, Brazil's 1970 triumph, and now another chapter as the tournament returns to North America.

Opened in 1966, Estadio Azteca became the first stadium to host two men's World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986. Brazil's 1970 victory over Italy and Argentina's 1986 final win both belong to its legend, while Maradona's Hand of God and Goal of the Century also happened there. The stadium has undergone multiple renovations, including recent work before 2026. Beyond football, it has hosted major concerts by artists such as Michael Jackson and U2, adding entertainment history to its sporting legacy.
